The Eastern Pennsylvania Homebrewer of the Year, or EPHY from here on out, is a friendly competition meant to foster both comradery and competition amongst neighboring homebrew clubs. Although the name suggests a competition for PA brewers, there are very few requirements and being a member of one of the homebrew clubs and a PA resident are not part of those requirements. This competition is open to everyone.
So what are the requirements you might ask. This is a points based competition. Points are scored at four Eastern PA competitions: War of the Worts hosted by Keystone Hops Homebrew Club, BUZZ OFF hosted by Brewers United for Zany Zymurgy, Malt Madness hosted by Lehigh Valley Homebrewers, and SCH ABC hosted by Stoney Creek Homebrewers.
Obviously it’s your beers that earn points. Scoring is 5pts for Gold, 3pts for Silver, 1pt for Bronze and .5pt for Honorable Mention. Best of Show gets you bonus points: 1st=3pts, 2nd=2pts, and 3rd=1pt. You are only going to earn points for the four top scoring beers you entered per competition. Meaning you can get 20 points max for the general judging session and then 6 bonus points if you sweep BOS; 26 points max for the competition. The four beer max is done to prevent one brewer from flooding all competitions with their beers in an effort to tip the scales in their favor. Anyone can still flood the competitions with their beers, but you will only be scored on the top four entries.
EPHY standings and results are hosted here on the Stoney Creek Homebrewers website. The administrator of the scoring is the club’s Competition Kaiser. Feel free to reach out to Tony at email@example.com with any questions.
